GENEALOGY COMPUTER HARDWARE

This page gives a basic introduction into what equipment you need for genealogy. It was prepared for the March 2005 meeting of the NP GCG.

We have already covered hardware and software. This page covers some other things you might need.

Journal

Keep a diary or journal of your genealogy work. This is a good way to keep track of odd notes, things to do, references, etc. Keep a note of where you search and what you find. This is worthwhile even if you don't find anything, so you don't search there again later.

It is also to make up a folder with you key family history data. Take this with you for reference when undertaking research.

File

Take care to properly store paper documents, such as certificates, photographs, copies, scans, etc. These need to be kept in a dark, dry place, and be sure to use acid free paper. It is worth the effort to organise things in some way that makes sense to you.

Camera

A camera can be useful if you are visiting significant places. Digital cameras are popular as they are inexpensive, and you can check the quality of the photo on the spot.

Some people find a portable, hand held scanner useful for recording interesting portions of documents.

Other resources

A good map of the area where your ancestors lived. Even though place names change, a modern roadmap can be very useful. Older maps are also available for some locations.

Some genealogists have their own microfilm or microfiche reader, although in most cases you can get by using readers at libraries and family history societies.
