ADSL

ADSL is Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line. This system uses an ordinary telephone line, carrying the digital signal at frequencies higher than those used for the voice signal.

ADSL performance drops off with distance from the exchange. This graph shows how bandwidth (connection speed) varies with distance from the telephone exchange. This distance is along the wire, and so is generally more than the straight line distance from your house to the exchange.
