PC Housekeeping
These pages contain a few notes on PC housekeeping. These are the basic things you could do to keep your PC healthy, based on what I've picked up over the years.
These notes are mainly written for people with a Microsoft Windows system. Other systems will be different, but the same principles should generally apply.
Clean out unused files
Many programmes leave files behind on your hard disc that are never used again. Clean out these to free up disc space and maybe speed up your PC.
Checkdisk and Defrag
After lots of use, things on the hard drive can get rather messy. Use Scandisk to fix errors and defrag to reorganise files.
Backup
Any data worth keeping is worth backing up. It is a chore, but can save a lot of grief.
Virus Protection
Virus attacks are becoming fairly common, and can cause you real damage. Protection is relatively easy, but you have to do it.
Firewall
If you connect to the internet, you could be the victim of a cracker. Use a firewall to prevent them getting into your PC.
Updates
On a regular basis, security flaws are found in software. Fixes for these are usually developed and provided by the software developer.
